Page Rank Named after the founders of Google, one of the key elements used by Google to determine a site's relevance to a user's search. It is a measure of the quantity and relevance of links to a web page (not a web site). Hence there may be many links to a given web page, but if they are from irrelevant web pages, that destination web page will not necessarily have a high Page Rank. Click here for more info.
 
Platform agnostic Refers to code or an application that is able to run on any platform. A platform is a made up of the operating system, and hardware, such as the motherboard.
 
Positioning The process of creating an image for a product in the minds of target customers.
 
Positioning Statement A concise written statement of the positioning concept, conveying the essential features of the brand and its niche. A plausible, memorable image-enhancing written summation of a product's or brand's desired stature.
 
PPC Pay Per Click is a form of targeted advertising on the web. You determine what keywords a User must select on  participating search engine sites in order to see your ad. Your ad is displayed for free when they enter these keywords. When your ad is clicked on by a User, then you pay - usually in the region of 20c to $2.
 
Public Relations A planned and sustained effort to establish and maintain goodwill and mutual understanding between an organisation and its target publics
 
Reach The percentage of consumers in the advertising target actually exposed to a particular advertisement in a stated time period.
 
Registrar A Registrar is where to go and register a new domain name. They will also let you know if a domain name is unavailable. Once registered, the domain is "Parked" with them until you move your site to your web hosting company. Registrars are themselves registered by ICANN, to ensure management of domain names is carried out properly. Two examples are networksolutions.com & domainsatcost.com.
   
Reverse Type This is reverse type.
 
RGB Red, Green, Blue - The standard set of colours used for creating web colours, as opposed to CMYK.
 
RIP Ready A raster image processor or RIP is used to convert the output of a Pre-Press computer system into a format usable by an imagesetter. Images must be in this format "Ready" in order to go on a print press - as opposed to Vector graphics.
 
Scalable A computer application or product (hardware or software) is said to be scalable if it can continue to function well when changed in size or volume in order to meet a user need. Typically, the rescaling is to a larger size or volume. For example, your database has grown 10 fold with information, is your system sufficiently scalable to accommodate the increased information. Also, it is the ability not only to function well in the rescaled situation, but to actually take full advantage of it. For example, an application program would be scalable if it could be moved from a smaller to a larger operating system and take full advantage of the larger operating system in terms of performance (user response time and so forth) and the larger number of users that could be handled.
 
 
Server A computer program that provides services to other computer programs in the same or other computers. More commonly understood to be the computer that a server program runs in. A web server is a specific type of server, that serves web pages or files to a User's computer which they request through their web browser.
 
SSL The Secure Sockets Layer is a commonly-used protocol for managing the security of a message transmission on the Internet. You can confirm a website is using SSL, by checking the url can only be viewed if it starts with "https://" (and not" http://"). Technically . . . SSL uses a program layer located between the Internet's Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and Transport Control Protocol (TCP) layers. It uses the public-and-private key encryption, which also includes the use of a digital certificate.
 
SQL Structured Query Language is a standard interactive and programming language for getting information from and updating a database.
 
System A system, as referred to in this web site, is a collection of software and hardware  "elements or components" (e.g. code objects, web server) that are organized to make your web site/application work.
 
Technical specification document A document outlining the technical requirements for the development of a software project. It includes both software standards such as which programming languages, and hardware standards such as server access speed.
 
Third party endorsement An endorsement, or support for your company, or product made by a third party to you and your customer. For example John buys your Widget, he loves it, tells Jane "this Widget is the best thing since sliced bread"; John is providing a third party endorsement of your product to Jane. Another example is newspaper editorials of your product.
 
Traffic In the Web World context, Traffic is the number of visitors to a web page or web site. It refers to the number of visitors, hits, page accesses, etc., over a given time period. As a general term, it describes data traveling around the Internet.
